Resources Every New Parent Should Know About

Being a new parent is overwhelming enough without having to hunt down every helpful resource on your own. Here's a round-up of things worth knowing about, whether you're expecting or already deep in the newborn haze.

Library Story Time
Your local library is a great free resource starting as early as 6 or 8 weeks old. Story time gets your baby used to being read to, and it gets you out of the house — which matters more than people realize in those early months. Many libraries even have a specific "lap babies" section for the youngest attendees, so you're not sitting next to toddlers running circles around the room. While you're there, get your baby their own library card and let them "check out" their own books.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
This is one of those resources that feels too good to be true, but it's real: your child can receive one free book a month, mailed directly to your home, from birth until age 5. Newborns are welcome, and you can sign up at any time before age 5 — no need to catch it from day one.

Rhea Lana's Consignment Sale
Held twice a year, Rhea Lana's is a massive kids' and family consignment pop-up. The Baton Rouge location runs at the Lamar Dixon Center, and there are also locations in New Orleans and Lafayette (plus most major cities nationwide). Some days require a ticket for early entry; other days are open and free. Great for finding gently used baby gear and clothes without paying retail. Typically the last day or two is ½ price day for some REALLLY good deals!

Formula Coupons
Never pay full price for formula. Both Similac and Enfamil regularly offer coupons directly through their websites or apps — it's an easy way to save on one of the biggest recurring baby expenses.

Pampers App
The Pampers app also offers regular deals and rewards points that add up over time, just for purchases you're already making.
***** Huggies needs to get on board and make an app!!!!!

Local "Free Stuff" Facebook Groups
Search Facebook for local buy-nothing or free groups in your area. Parents constantly rotate out baby gear, clothes, and supplies their kids have outgrown — it's a great way to both give and receive.

Fetch App
Fetch lets you scan receipts for gift card rewards. It works on any receipt, from any store — I know someone who scans receipts they find on the ground, just to rack up points.

WIC and Medicaid
And if you qualify, don't hesitate to look into WIC and Medicaid. These services exist to support families, and using them is nothing to feel ashamed of.
